چکیده

ABSTRACT To illustrate for a broad public acoustic magnitudes, level-thermometers can be used which show e.g. on the lower end whispering leaves and on the upper end a jet aircraft. When using instead a loudness-thermometer, the sequence of sounds sometimes can be reversed compared to a level-thermometer. From an engineering point of view, these differences frequently can be traced back to differences in the spectral distribution. However, also some cognitive effects might play a role, e.g. that musical sounds are preferred in comparison to technical sounds.

INTER - NOISE 2007 28 - 31 AUGUST 2007 ISTANBUL , TURKEY Psychoacoustics , sound quality and music

In this keynote, relations between psychoacoustics, sound quality, and music are discussed. In the domain of psychoacoustics, a Dynamic Loudness Model (DLM) is presented which can simulate loudness perception of sounds with strong temporal structure for both normal hearing persons and persons with (slight) hearing deficits. Recent results on the hearing sensation pitch strength will be presente...

Study of Noise Loudness and Sharpness Effects on Cognitive Performance on Male Students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences

Introduction: The noise could affect some aspects of human health, including the cognitive performance. In addition to sound pressure level and exposure time, the psychoacoustic features of noise may cause destructive effects on humans. A few recent studies have been conducted on effect of sound quality on cognitive performance. This study aims to find the noise loudness and sharpness levels as...

Tracking cortical entrainment in neural activity: auditory processes in human temporal cortex

A primary objective for cognitive neuroscience is to identify how features of the sensory environment are encoded in neural activity. Current auditory models of loudness perception can be used to make detailed predictions about the neural activity of the cortex as an individual listens to speech. We used two such models (loudness-sones and loudness-phons), varying in their psychophysiological r...

Investigating the effect of personality traits on sensitivity, annoyance and loudness perception due to exposure to high frequency noise

Introduction: Although noise characteristics such as intensity and frequency are the main cause of detrimental effects, it is important to pay attention to the personality traits of individuals as the host of adverse health effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of personality traits on sensitivity, annoyance and loudness perception due to exposure to high frequency sound....

Sequential Effects in Loudness

This paper reviews the effects of one sound on the loudness of a following sound. The following sound is usually perceived as softer than when presented in isolation. At least five sequential effects can be identified. (1) Simple loudness adaptation: the earlier part of an ongoing sound results in a decline in the loudness of later parts. (2) Ipsilaterally induced adaptation: increments in the ...
